AP Cites Workers ‘Occupying’ Factory as a ‘Rallying Point’

In an article heroically chronicling the efforts of 200 union workers “occupying” their old window and door factory the Associated Press made sure to emphasize how the squatters have given the nation’s grim economy a “rallying point.”

Here is how they introduced the story (emphasis added):

The nation’s grim economy now has a rallying point: Employees at a window-and-door factory that went out of business have taken over the building in a siege that has come to symbolize the woes of the ordinary worker.

Yes, that’s right; the AP sees a group of people who are illegally squatting on private property as symbolic of ordinary workers. They even describe the actions of these workers as a “siege” in an apparent sign that the AP thinks people unhappy with the bad economy should rally and lay siege to their work places.

But the AP wasn’t finished glamorizing and militarizing these workers actions:

The Republic Windows and Doors factory closed abruptly last week after Bank of America canceled the company’s financing. Since then, about 200 of the 240 laid-off workers have taken turns occupying the factory, declaring that they will not leave until getting assurances they will receive severance and accrued vacation pay.

Now, not only are the glorious workers laying ‘siege’ to the factory but they are occupying it and declaring their demands for money be met before they leave. As shocking and unlawful as this may seem to others it seems the AP can’t get enough of this behavior.

But the standoff has also come to embody mounting anger over the government’s willingness to bail out deep-pocketed corporations but not average people.

However, even as the AP is cheering on this act which they seem to view as something  glorious and militaristic they cast doubts on the legitimacy of the workers claim that the law says they are owed vacation pay because they were not given 60 days notice before they were laid off:

The law allows businesses to close without giving the required notice under certain circumstances, such as if another company that is the sole source of income suddenly goes out of business, said Mark Johnson, president of Erisa Benefits Consulting in Grapevine, Texas, who said he was not familiar with the Republic case.

Sad News: Palin Didn’t snub Oprah According to Aid

Despite the whiny insinuations of Oprah an aid of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has denied that she is purposely snubbing the crybaby day time host.

From CNN:

Sarah Palin’s camp is denying claims she’s is snubbing talk show host Oprah Winfrey, telling CNN Monday the decision was “nothing personal” — the Alaska governor has just been flooded with so many media requests she simply hasn’t had the time to sit down with the daytime talk show icon.

“The governor was invited to appear. She was also invited to appear on Letterman, Leno, Stephanopoulos, The Daily Show. She passed on a vast majority of these requests,” Bill McAllister, Palin’s communications director and press secretary.

“We’re up to about 250 requests for interviews and appearances and so on. It’s worldwide, there’s still a tremendous amount of interest. It’s nothing personal about Oprah, it’s just that she turned down the vast majority of these requests.”

A Palin appearance at a later date is still possible, said McAllister: “I’m not aware that it’s been ruled out.”

How much does that suck? I can understand Palin wanting to keep all media outlets open for her use but I still would’ve loved to have seen Palin lay a verbal smack down on Oprah for her disrespectful banning of Palin during the campaign because she didn’t want to make her show political (what a joke of an excuse on Oprah’s part by the way). Oh well… you can’t always get what you want I suppose.

Oprah: Palin Snubbed Me

In an interview with “Extra” Oprah stated the following:

“I said I would be happy to talk to Sarah Palin when the election was over… I went and tried to talk to Sarah Palin and instead she talked to Greta [Van Susteren]. She talked to Matt [Lauer]. She talked to Larry [King]. But she didn’t talk to me.”

Gosh I hope Oprah’s little whinny insinuation is true. I really really hope that Sarah Palin did purposely snub her.

I guess the golden rule still rings true huh Oprah? Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

Terrorist Lego Causes Idiotic Controversy

Yes, that’s right, a little Lego figure is apparently offending people left and right. Now, mind you, those offended appear to be either completely and utterly misinformed or just plain stupid.

Our story begins with a small family-run Lego customizing business known as BrickArms. This company makes little Lego weapons and customizes Lego figurines to look like military icons and their enemies. Included in the enemies column is an Islamic-terrorist character.

And there’s where the fun begins…

You see, somehow some people, who must have be barred from playing with action figures as children, looked at this terrorist Lego figurine and said to themselves “this toy glorifies terrorism”. I’m not kidding… people literally looked at this generic bad guy character and surmised that it was telling kids that terrorists are good.

What planet are these people on? Where they ever children? Isn’t it obvious that this toy doesn’t glorify terrorism but rather demonizes it? Do they really think that when children play cops and robbers it somehow glorifies thieves? Should kids only be allowed to play with the good guys and how would that even work?

In fact, kids need to create scenarios where good guys are pitted against bad guys in order to develop a healthy sense of morality. It disturbs me that some would view a child acting out the struggle between good and evil as “disgusting”.

Whats even more interesting is that the same company making the terrorist figurines also produces several Nazi figurines. Yet, I don’t hear anyone complaining about the glorification of Nazis? Why the double standard?

Actually, forget that question, I think a better question is… where do they find people like this?

Obama Drops Windfall Profits Tax

In an act that further proves that Obama believes there is such a thing as too much success he decided to drop his famed windfall profits tax proposal.

Now, right now you might be saying “But CP (College Politico), dropping a proposed tax is a good thing and encourages success”. To which I would reply “yes, awesome and intelligent reader, that is true but its not the fact that he dropped the tax proposal which proves he thinks a person or company can be too successful but, rather, its the reasoning behind it.

You see, Obama has decided to drop the tax not because Oil companies have lowered their profit margins but instead because the price of oil has fallen below $80 a barrel.

So, while oil companies are still making the same percent profit they were when oil was at $140
a barrel somehow their profits are no longer considered “windfall”. In other words, oil companies are operating in the exact same fashion they were when Obama called jumped on the “windfall” tax bandwagon but somehow they were taking advantage of us then and now they aren’t.

Right, I think I got it now… oh wait, I’m sorry, I can’t understand it because it is absolutely absurd!

Of course the windfall profits tax was always absurd because the oil industry has one of the smallest profit margins (about 8%) of any industry in the world (I’ve seen reports that Google has up to a 50% profit margin for some of its online advertising but nobody is calling for a Google windfall tax). And it would still be absurd even if the oil industry had the largest profit margin because the industry is not a monopoly but is made up of many competing companies and, so, if people choose to buy from a company with a 50% profit margin instead of the company with a 10% or 5% profit margin how is the company at fault? If customers are willing to pay the price set by the seller then the seller cannot be at fault.

In fact, the only way a seller can get away with price gouging and windfall profiteering is if they are monopolies devoid of competition. And, furthermore, the only way a monopoly can form is if the government either allows it to or, and this is far more likely, actively creates it. So, if Mr. Obama is truly concerned with “windfall” profits he ought to direct us away from our current slide down the socialist slope and back towards a steadfast commitment towards free market capitalism.

UPDATE: Hot Air and Malkin chime in on this issue with quite interesting points

Richardson joins Obama’s Cabinet

The day after Hillary Clinton accepted the Secretary of State post the fact that New Mexican Governor Bill Richardson will be nominated as Commerce Secretary was leaked.

Yup, the man widely (and rightfully) referred to as “Judas” by the Clinton camp will now be working hand in hand with Hillary herself. Brilliant!

Forget the “team of rivals” label this is much closer to a “team of liberal who hate each other” shaping up. I guess we will have to wait and see how it plays out. The best we can hope for, i would think, is that they quickly implode and keep each other from implementing their idiotic lefty policies.

Keep praying.

Swiss Vote to Give Heroin to Addicts

Chalk this one up as yet another reason I’m glad to be an American:

In a stroke of brilliance Swiss voters overwhelmingly approved state sponsored heroin distribution to the exact group of people you don’t want to give heroin to… addicts. The vote keeps in place a government program intended to slowly ease addicts off of heroin.

The idiotic rehab technique is controversial at best with the United States and even the U.N. narcotics board claiming it may actually fuel drug abuse. Gee… ya think so?

I think the best part of this whole story, though, has to be the fact that the very same voters who want to give out free heroin voted to keep marijuana off limits. Can you say irony? Because, apparently, the 35 year old Swiss musician the AP quoted on this can’t:

“I think it’s very important to help these people, but not to facilitate the using of drugs,” Borer said. “You can just see in the Netherlands how it’s going. People just go there to smoke.”

Yea… giving heroin to addicts doesn’t facilitate their use of drugs at alllllllllll.

So stick around and I will bring you the best and most interesting stories before the big blogs get a whiff of them and I might even toss in a dash of my conservative commentary.

Also, feel free to share your Thanksgiving stories.

Associated Press Cites Cookie Success as Example of Obama’s Change

No… I couldn’t make this up if I tried:

Want an example of the change Barack Obama is bringing to the country? Check out cookie sales at Baby Boomers Cafe in Des Moines.

Yes… that’s right, not only is Obama our new savior but he is now our new Pillsbury Doughboy.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_I3br9m-68

Actually, judging by this comment from the owner of the cafe that Obama has shown his grace upon maybe he is a strange doughboy messiah combination, or, in other words, he is a savory savior:

“I think everybody just … thought, ‘Oh, great cookie, great president _ the world is a happy place. Barack’s going to fix all the problems and if I have a bite of this cookie it’s going to make me feel good,'”

Ann Coulter’s Jaw Wired Shut

Looks like the much maligned/adored Coulter had her jaw wired shut after a terrible fall. Predictably the liberal blog machine has reported on this story with unabated jubilation. Go ahead and check out the liberal blog-o-sphere (just be sure to get your rabies shots after wards).

Despite my distaste for about 95% of the things that come out of Ann’s mouth and despite my belief that the conservative movement would be far better off without people like her I still wish her a speedy recovery. And I would never wish something like this on her.

I hope you get well soon Ann but I won’t lie… I’m going to enjoy your silence.
